Spinal Manipulative Therapy

Spinal and Manipulative therapy has been shown to be safe and effective in the treatment of spinal and joint problems.

Most people with spinal or joint pain will benefit from gentle mobilization or movement of individual joints to reduce pain and increase range of motion.

Pain Management

There are many differing treatments available for pain management. Depending on the type and nature of the pain problem benefit may be achieved from hands on treatment, acupuncture and an individual exercise program. More complex pain problems will require greater input. The goals of pain management may include reducing or abolishing the pain symptoms or in more severe cases improved function despite persisting pain symptoms. We always work closely with your GP, Specialist and family to make sure you get the optimal care.

Virtually everyone will benefit from an individual exercise program. Exercise has been shown to be safe and effective in treating joint conditions, improving mood and cardiovascular function as well as improving function, return to work rates and general well being. Our exercise programs range from simple minimally intrusive home programs to intensive gym based strength or cardio programs, to specific running programs dependant on your needs.

Acupuncture can be a safe and effective treatment to reduce pain. Essentially Acupuncture can stimulate the brain and nerves to release different endorphins or chemicals to reduce pain and improve blood flow. It is a very useful adjunct to conventional treatment or as a stand alone treatment on its own. We only use single use disposable needles.

Pre Operative Rehabilitation

As a general rule the better condition you go into surgery the better you will recover post surgically. Most people heading off for an operation would benefit from some form of cardiovascular fitness and strengthening before they have their operation. The benefits are improved muscular support around the joints, balance and improved cardiovascular function leading to a faster recovery.

Post Operative Rehabilitation

Most conditions will benefit from some degree of post operative rehabilitation. Often surgery is only the beginning of the rehabilitation process. Major surgeries may take 12-18 months for people to reach their peak condition. Post operative rehabilitation is vital to restore joint range of motion, muscular strength, balance and function following an operation

Muscle Balance Assessments

Imbalances in muscles can occur following injuries or with people with faulty movement patterns. If these imbalances are not addressed this may cause problems with different joints or muscles. In most cases an individual assessment followed by the prescription of specific exercised can correct these imbalances. This can improve function and reduce the chance of injury.

Gym Based Programs

Individual who want to maximize their strengthening or function may benefit from a structured gym program. Gym programs are specifically designed to target areas which need strengthening. A period of time spent performing gym based strengthening, pre or post operatively is invaluable. We have links with several of the gyms in the Papakura District.

Breathing Disorders

Breathing disorders or bad breathing is far more common than we think. This may include Hyper Ventilation Syndrome, COPD, Asthma as well as Stress and Tension problems. Athletic Performance can also be affected by Breathing Disorders. Treatment involves a careful history and examination followed by the prescription of specific breathing exercises. This will involve teaching you to breathe correctly using your diaphragm. Tony Ashcroft is a certified BRADCLIFF practitioner and uses these techniques himself while running Ultra Marathons.

Physiotherapy Home Visits

Sometimes injuries may be significant enough that you may be unable to attend clinic based physiotherapy. Southern Physiotherapy Ltd may be able to assist by providing home visits until you are able to attend the clinic. Pricing structure is available on request. Work Place Visits

Depending on the severity or nature of your injury a work based visit may be indicated. There is often a natural progression from clinic based treatment to the work place. A work site visit may allow us to tailor make a suitable exercise program along with return to work program. We will also offer advice on biomechanics and manual handling solutions to minimize to risk of re-injury on return to work. We also teach work place fitness programs.
